Get Involved

CKHA is built by volunteers like you. Every practice, game, fundraiser, and team event happens because families step up to help. Whether you have an hour or a few hours to spare, there's a role for you—no experience necessary!

Why Volunteer?

Build Community

Hockey families are some of the best people you'll meet. Volunteering is the fastest way to get to know other parents, coaches, and families in our program.

Support Your Child's Experience

Being behind the scenes—whether scoring the game, helping in the locker room, or coaching—gives you a deeper appreciation for everything that goes into hockey. Your child sees you invested in their sport.

Make a Real Difference

Every volunteer role directly impacts player experience and program quality. Without volunteers, programs don't run.

Gain Skills and Knowledge

Not familiar with hockey? That's okay. Volunteer roles are a great way to learn the sport, understand rules, and become more confident at the rink.

Give Back to a Sport You Love

Hockey is more than a game—it teaches teamwork, resilience, and dedication. By volunteering, you're helping more kids experience these values.

Volunteer Opportunites

What you do:

- Supervise and support players in the locker room before and after games/practices

- Help younger players with equipment and transitions

- Ensure a safe, respectful environment (enforce behavior expectations)

- Follow locker room facility policies

Time commitment: Typically 1-2 hours per assigned session

Why it matters: Locker rooms are where players build camaraderie and learn responsibility. Monitors ensure safety and positive culture.

Good for: Parents who want hands-on involvement, those comfortable working with young people

- Background check

- Completion of volunteer orientation

Note: This is a required role for families receiving assistance through the Chris Faro Memorial Fund

What you do:

- Keep official game score/clock

- Manage penalty box

- Operate scoreboards

Time commitment: 1-2 hours per game (usually 1-2 games per week depending on your level)

🎓 Coaching & Assistant Coaches

What you do:

- Help teach skating, positioning, game concepts

- Support head coach with team development

- Provide feedback and encouragement

Time commitment: 2-3 practices/week + games (more structured commitment)

Why it matters: Coaches directly shape player development and experience

Requirements:

- Safe Sport certification

- Background check

- USA Hockey coaching certification (varies by level—we'll guide you)

Good for: Hockey experience helpful, but not always required depending on program level

Note: See our Coach Resources for coaching pathways and training requirements

💰 Fundraising & Events

What you do:

- Help plan and run team fundraisers

- Organize team events, tournaments, or social gatherings

- Coordinate donation campaigns

Time commitment: Project-based; ranges from 2-4 hours for a single event to ongoing throughout season

What you do:

- Serve on CKHA Board of Directors (governance, policy, long-term planning)

- Join committees (Finance, Policies, Facilities, etc.)

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I volunteer?

It's totally up to you! Some families commit to one role all season; others pick a few games or events. Flexibility is fine.

I don't know anything about hockey—can I still volunteer?

Absolutely. Most roles don't require hockey knowledge. We'll train you. Enthusiasm and reliability matter more than expertise.

Do I have to volunteer?

Nope—it's completely optional (except for Faro Fund recipients, who have a volunteer requirement as part of their assistance).

When do I volunteer?

It depends on the role:

- Locker room monitors: Before/after games and sometimes practices

- Game day support: During scheduled games

- Fundraising: Usually evenings/weekends for events

- Board: Typically 1 evening/month for meetings

Can I do multiple roles?

Yes! Many families take on a primary role (like locker room monitor) plus help with events occasionally.

What if I have to miss a scheduled shift?

Life happens. Just communicate with your volunteer coordinator ASAP. They'll help find coverage if needed.

Do I get anything for volunteering?

Beyond the satisfaction of helping your hockey community? Some CKHA partners offer discounts to volunteers on equipment purchases (ask about details).
