Travel Hockey

The Lexington Thoroughbreds hockey program is committed to providing a top level experience for aspiring young hockey players. Our organization strives to create an environment that fosters the development and competitiveness of youth athletes by maximizing ice time and delivering the highest quality of instruction available.

The Thoroughbreds program offers an extensive range of teams, tailored to accommodate players of all ages and multiple skill levels. Through a player evaluation process during tryouts, we select teams that align with each player's abilities and potential. It is crucial for both players and parents to fully understand and embrace the substantial time commitment required to participate in our travel program. We expect our families to prioritize their involvement with the travel team, as it plays a pivotal role in a player’s hockey journey.

By joining the Thoroughbreds travel hockey program players can expect exceptional coaching and training and an abundance of ice time, empowering them to reach their full potential on and off the ice.

Ages

The travel hockey program is for players in the 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U age divisions.

WHO

Travel hockey teams are for players that attended tryouts and received an invitation from a coach to play on a specific team. Tryouts are held at the conclusion of the hockey travel season, typically in late April and early May.

Where

Our Travel teams play in the Buckeye Travel Hockey League (BTHL). Practices and home games are at the Lexington Ice Center. Away games may be played in Kentucky or neighboring states (IN, OH, WV, TN), and usually are no more than 3 hours travel. Travel tournaments may be several states away.

When

The travel hockey season starts in late August with practices and typically concludes by the first week of March with the league tournament.

Practices

Most teams practice 2x per week for 1 to 1 ½ hours per day at Lexington Ice Center. Practices may include optional off ice practices prior to or after on-ice sessions in the training center located at the ice rink.

Games

Teams can expect to play anywhere between 24-46 games over the course of the season. This includes exhibition, league and tournament games, and is dependent on age group. Games are typically held on weekends with occasional Friday/Monday games during travel tournaments.

Uniforms

Club uniforms are required and can be purchased through our Pure Hockey online team store. Uniform requirements vary by age group.

Program Cost

Travel team expenses can vary based on factors such as the team's size and additional costs like league and tournament fees. Usually, a team consists of 13-15 skaters and 1-2 goalies. Player expenses for a season can range from $1200 to $2500, and this doesn't include local travel expenses such as gas, food, and overnight stays when traveling to ice arenas in KY, IN, and OH. To minimize costs, teams often play the same league team twice in one day, reducing the need for overnight stays and excessive travel. The number of overnight stays can range from 5-10, depending on the team's choice to participate in out-of-town tournaments. However, teams have fundraising opportunities available to help lower these expenses.

Additional costs that can be expected are usually only related with travel, such as food, fuel, and hotel.
